Carola

(Carolus I-Latino-Fontan)
1994 Gray Holsteiner Mare 17.2hh
Stamm 3464

A direct daughter of Holsteiner stallion, Carolus I, Carola was imported as a four-year old to Canada where she competed with Jonathon Millar up to 1.4m before a non-performace related injury cut short a promising career at the age of just 7. Already a proven producer, Carola offers exceptional Holsteiner breeding deeply rooted in the foundation of the breed.

Carola was bred in Germany by Patricia Corbe, a Holsteiner breeder most famous today for producing Laura Kraut's Grand Prix and 2008 Olympic competitor, Cedric. Not surprisingly, Cedric's dam has very similar breeding to Carola: Carolus I on an L-line (Ladykiller) - F-line (Farnese) mare.

Carola's sire is the famous Capitol son, Carolus I (link to a short video of Carolus I). Carolus I, out of a Roman-Ladykiller dam, earned his acclaim on the international show jumping circuit with numerous 1.50 m class wins. He consistently passed on his best genes to his offspring, which are known for their type, technique and temperament. His success as a sire is profoundly evident by the sheer number (132) that are successful in advanced showing jumping and their collective lifetime earnings of over 1.4 million Euros. Carolus I descends from stamm 2666 and the mare Ukraine. She is the dam of the international show jumper Miss Risiko and Ballet and the approved stallion Rio Grande. Ukraine includes among her direct descendants the international jumpers Carolus I and II, Cantaro, Calero, Joy FPG, Cartoon 7, Mr. Kahlke, Finess and the approved stallions Clintissimo Z and Falkner.

Carola's dam is the premium Holsteiner mare, Adetta. Adetta received 49 bonits (8776678) at her inspection in Holstein in 1989. After her mare grading, Adetta completed her mare performance test with a very high score of 130 (average score is 100) and then competed in 1.2m classes before she began her broodmare career where she produced offspring by Carolus I and Loutano.

Adetta was sired by the Ladykiller son, Latino. He was approved with bonits of 8877777. Dr. Rossow describes Latino as classically elegant, of medium frame, with a good expression and beautiful lines. Modern in type with strong enough bone. Very good, springy gaits. Latino's dam-sire, Moltke I, was an excellent riding horse with smooth topline and good stallion expression and good basic gaits and extraordinary jumping talent with scope and bascule. Moltke was good under saddle and very elastic.

Adetta's dam was the prolific progenitor Ibylla. Ibylla was the dam to 11 offspring, almost all of which were upper level competitors (Z-level through Grand Prix) in the disciplines of jumping, dressage and even driving.

Through her sire, Ibylla carries the blood of another of the pillars of the Holsteiner breed, Farnese. A “prepotent sire par excellance! [Farnese is] The best type-sustaining stallion endowed with the Holsteiner performance assets, especially in trot and jumping ability.” According to Dr. Rossow, Farnese personified "one hundred forty years of pure breeding, in dignity, substance and gaits." He describes Farnese as “Imposing, big framed, most important of all sires. Good face, strong neck, good shoulder and back. Minor faults through the loin, strong, well-muscled hind-quarter. Good legs with big feet. Excellent, ground covering trot, good canter and rather weak walk. Good temperament.” Farnese sired 15 approved sons and 194 approved daughters.

But beyond the sires and dams, a closer look at Carola's pedigree shows a mare who is strongly rooted in the foundation stallions that created today's modern Holsteiner. She is line-bred to the stallions Ladykiller, Cottage Son and Maximus and brings 3 crosses to the great Ramzes through her sire. Most interesting though is that Carola is line-bred to the Holsteiner mare Hirtin, who is the foundation mare of stamm 2666. Hirtin is represented in Carola's pedigree, through her best daughter, Ukraine (see above) and through her best son, Albrant, the Olympic and World Champion event horse.

Carola has produced offspring by Good Times and Popeye K. She has proven to be a excellent mother who throws talented jumpers with correct, powerful gaits. Carola is in foal for 2012 to the Holsteiner Grand Prix stallion, Catoki (Cambridge-Silvester-Cor De La Bryere). This foal will have very similar breeding to Laura Kraut's Cedric.  A colt-option is available for pre-purchase.
