Haydn
(Solid Silver-Calypso II-Aldato) Stamm 2004
1993 Silver Gray Holsteiner Mare 16.3hh
Haydn's pedigree is comprised exclusively of internationally succesful performers and producers. The prepotency of her sire line is easily seen as Haydn herself is a feminine version of her sire, Solid Silver, and her grandsire, Silbersee. With her exquisite head and neck, sloping shoulder, strong coupling and powerful hindquarters, Haydn is truly poetry in motion.
A rare gem in American Holsteiner breeding, Haydn carries no L-line in her pedigree and just one cross to the ubiquitous Cor de la Bryere. Haydn's sire, Solid Silver, successfully showed on the jumper circuit with Rodney Jenkins until he was injured. Solid Silver produced beautiful athletes with good temperaments and jumping talent. He himself was a very kind and gentle stallion. Solid Silver's sire, the Selle Francais stallion, Silbersee, was one of the most successful jumpers in the world for years with Dr. Michael Rüping. Silbersee was shortlisted for the Olympics in Seoul and Korea, competed and placed in four World Cups, won the Hamburg Derby, the Grand Prix of Aachen, the Grand Prix of Denmark, Grand Prix of Sweden, Neunmunster Grand Prix, German Jumping Championship and was named Horse of the Year in Europe twice.
Solid Silver is from the Holsteiner stamm 2067, the well-respected mare line created by one of Holstein's best breeders, Reimer Witt. This stamm has produced numerous international jumpers as well as the approved stallions Con Spirito R (Sires of the World Champion), Con Caletto, Landstreicher, Sympatico, Lord Logger, Carthano, Bratt Z, Catiago and the Nijhof stallion Canturano among others. Solid Silver's dam, Lauscherrin, a prolific producer in her own right, carries the coveted and rare breeding nick of Sacramento Song-Cottage Son. Sacramento Song xx stood in Holstein as a private stallion for 7 years. He is viewed as one of the best sires of show jumpers in Holstein since the war. In spite of a very limited number of offspring (because he was a private stallion), 40 jumpers were successful up to the highest classes. Sacramento Song is described in Dr. Dietrich Rossow’s Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed as: "A classically bred, English Thoroughbred, with beautiful, smoothly harmonious topline. Beautiful head, rather low set on neck, impressive shoulder with good coupling to the croup. Well muscled, strong legs and feet, sufficient gaits. Tremendous jumping ability, very tight with front end and good with knees. Top jumper sire!" Ironically, Sacramento Song is perhaps best known today as the sire of Sandro who when re-imported by Paul Schockemohle in 1984, became the founder of arguably today's most popular dresssage breeding line in Germany...the breeding phenom Sandro Hit.
Emita, the mother of Lauscherrin, is also the mother of the Holsteiner Verband stallion Masetto. Masetto is perhaps best known as the dam sire of the show jumping stallion Clinton (v. Corrado) who placed 4th in the 2004 Athens Olympics and is also coming into his prime as a sire of internationally successful jumping offspring and numerous approved stallion sons.
Bred by Sandstone, Haydn is a full sister to Sandstone Cashmire and Finest Silver. Cashmire jumped successfully on the US and European circuits with Gaby Salick. In 1996, Cashmire was High AO Jumper Circuit Champion (a division overrun by World Cup and Olympic horses) at WEF. Finest Silver is a premium mare with the AHHA and is proving herself to be an exceptional producer of sporthorses. Most notably, her daughter, Montecristo, successfully competed in the Young Jumper Series and then 1.45m open speed classes with Kyle King before being sold to an amateur.
The Calypso II-Aldato mother of these three mares, Sontessa, received her premium status from the Holsteiner Verband before being imported to the US and becoming the foundation broodmare for the Sandstone breeding program. Sontessa's full sister Rebecca, a states premium mare and advanced dressage competitor produced the Holsteiner approved stallion and international dressage horse, Chromatico. Further proving the strength of this direct mare line, Sontessa's dam, Floersheim, is the half-sister to the Holsteiner Verband approved stallion Lando (v. Ladykiller) and is the grand-dam or great-grand-dam to three approved stallions. In 2008, two stallions from this direct branch were presented at the Holsteiner Stallion approvals in Neumunster. Carlo, by Carlos DZ, was the Second Reserve Sieger Hengst. This female line (stamm 2004) has also produced the stallions Ariadus, Ratibor, Lando, Domingos, Livingstone, Acord's Champion, Cool Man K, Carnando, Caronimo, Contec, Tanenhof's Cyrano, Cromwell, Le Quidam, Lord's Highfly and Fahnrich.
Sontessa's sire, Calypso II, has been one of the most important sires in both Holstein and Hannover where he bred international competitors and influential breeding stallions, including Contender. It was Calypso II who introduced Cor de la Bryère blood to Hannover, ushering a new era of Hannoverian jumping breeding. Calypso II himself was a successful Grand Prix jumper under Michael Ruping, but he is most treasured as a valuable and versatile producer, his offspring excelling at both both jumping and dressage. His offspring have have winnings of one and a half million deutschmarks. On the basis of the Hanoverian mare tests, Calypso II achieves a dressage ranking of 131, and a jumping ranking of 167. His breeding index on the basis of his competition horses is 132 for dressage and 150 for jumping. Calypso II’s dam, Tabelle produced six approved stallions. Tabelle is a full-sister to Samei, who was the dam of the great Granat, a world champion dressage horse with Christine Stückelberger.
Sontessa's dam-sire, Aldato, was far and away the best Anblick son. Aldato, the brilliant show trotter, founded one of the top modern stallion lines in the Holsteiner breed. According to Dr. Rossow, he was an uphill horse of classic stallion type with a marvelous, harmonious topline and good expression. He had wonderful basic gaits with enormous drive from the haunches. He was an important sire who reproduced himself in a great number of the finest broodmares who in turn became the solid basis of many future competition horses. At the same time he produced numerous sport horses for all disciplines. Aldato's sire, Anblick was one of the best TB stallions to stand in Germany ever. His full brother, Abendfrieden, is the sire of the Hanoverian legend Pik As. Anblick sired 14 approved sons and the Olympic dressage and 1960's superstars Venetia and Antoinette. Anblick was also the sire of Ulana, the dam of Joost, the top showjumping sire whose progeny include VIP, Ultrazon, Palfrenier, Robin Foulard's Blue Chip and Ostra Carpets Carrera winner of the 1994 Aachen Grand Prix. The particular strength of this family is supple healthy horses with a joy for work.
Haydn is a premium mare with the BWP and a MMB with the AHHA. She has had foals by the stallions Sandstone Laurinn and Sandstone Conway and in 2007 presented Hialeah, a spectacular filly by Coconut Grove who received premium status at her inspection at just 9 weeks old. The filly is owned by East Wind Farm and is being retained as a future jumper mount and broodmare.
We are deeply saddened by the news that Haydn had to be put down because of a broken pastern suffered during a pasture accident. Our deepest condolences to Mary at Nonesuch Farm. Godspeed Haydn.
